Diving beetles can hunt for food underwater where land-living insects cannot compete.
Smaller species can remain underwater for several weeks without swimming to the surface because consuming the natural plant vegetation provides sufficient oxygen to breathe.
Bigger species however need to emerge frequently to draw oxygen from the surface.
These beetles are widespread around Europe in virtually all plant-rich waters like ponds, lakes, streams and rivers.
